It was lunchtime. We followed a trickling crowd into a place that reminded me of home, with its marble-top tables and stools.
This time, the Seemou Seekers visited a place popular for its pork noodles - Hon Kei Food Corner.
Despite being nestled within one of Penang's smaller lanes, the lane of Kampung Malabar, it seems like many people have heard of this Hon Kei Food Corner and have made their way over during office lunch break to have their tummies filled.
The place was a nice change in environment. It all looked really new and clean, not to mention airier than the average hawker centre.
Hon Kei mostly serves pork-based food, so it's definitely not a halal place.
You will have the choice of several types of noodles:
- vermicelli
- thick noodles
-thin noodles
-mixed noodles
or even porridge.
You could then also choose whether you wanted:
- minced pork
- pork brain
- pork kidney
- pork tripe
- pork intestines
- pork liver
- pork heart
or a mixture of several.
#foodporn :P
I ordered a bowl of minced pork (only. I'm not a huge fan of all those internal organs) with vermicelli noodles (mee suah), along with a cup of hot lime juice.
The bowl was served with plenty of meat, which impressed me as it was only around RM 6. The soup wasn't too salty either and I like to believe that it was altogether a pretty healthy meal.
The lime juice was very full-flavoured, but slightly too sweet for me. I think it was probably to counter the natural sourness of the fruit. Nevertheless, I drank it all.
We also ordered the Bitter Gourd Mixed Pork soup.
Again, there was a very generous amount of meat and vegetables.
Hon Kei also serves some food apart from its pork noodles, including loh bak, prawn fritters, yam, fish balls, taiwan sausages, and spring rolls, just to name a few.
I discovered this when I noticed that there was also some food displayed on a counter and went over to have a look, but I think that was actually the kitchen so I didn't step any further.
All in all, this is a place I definitely wouldn't mind returning to. I think I would, however, like try something slightly different when I visit for a second time.
