15 things to do in Penang in 2015!

0

I'm sure most of you have visited the various street art around Penang, not to mention the multitude of cafes around Georgetown, but despite being Penangnites (or not), have you done these?

We have compiled a list of a 15 things you can try in Penang. Just taking a weekend or two each month to try these would definitely be worth your time!

via
1. Catch a play at Penang PAC.

Their theatrical plays include world class performances by local and occasionally, international talents.
It would definitely be worth the price and your time sitting in one of their little red seats as you would be supporting the local art culture as well.

via
2. Climb 500 steps to the Waterfall Hilltop Temple.

Are you strong enough for this challenge?

More well-known as the Waterfall Hilltop Temple, the Balathandayuthapani Temple, or officially, the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Kovil, is one of the oldest Hindu Temples in Penang. In fact, the founding site is as old as the founding of Georgetown itself!

In 2012, the expansion of the temple was opened to public. This new temple is now a major tourist attraction in Penang and is frequented by many not only during Thaipusam. If you're a Penangnite, you should definitely see the marvels of the temple's interiors for yourself.

3. Revisit history in a Peranakan home.

The Peranakan mansions were homes to the wealthy Babas and Nyonyas (also known as Peranakans) at the end of the 19th century. Many of these buildings have been preserved and converted to museums after being restored to former glory, and include pieces of furniture as well as possessions of the former owners.

4. Ride a trishaw.

Be honest. How many of you Penangnites have ridden a trishaw?
Isn't it time you experienced seeing the town from one?

via
5. Eat more street food.

Because who can ever get enough?

6. Take a morning walk in Botanical Gardens.

Do you know how fresh and cooling the air in the Botanical Gardens is early in the morning? And no, you wouldn't be the only one. There are plenty of early birds jogging there so much that getting a parking lot may not be easy.

It definitely beats working out in a gym though.

via
7. Attend an event at the annual Georgetown Festival.

It started as a series of arts and culture events in celebration of Georgetown as a UNESCO Heritage site in 2008, before becoming Georgetown Festival in 2010.

Since then, they now host a month long series of spectacular events spanning the arts - from world-class performances to cross-culture creative collaborations, experimental art, traditional and contemporary performing arts, as well as exciting local community initiatives and public installations.

Definitely worth checking out.

8. Try a cup of coffee at a cafe you have yet to visit.

With so many new cafes (and still more opening) in Penang, there must surely be one you haven't tried.

Who knows, it might be your new favourite hangout spot!

via
9. Take a ride on the hop-on hop-off bus.

Newly introduced for tourists, the Penang hop-on hop-off bus features double-decker buses that brings you to various attractions around the island. What is more, Malaysian citizens get more than half-price discounts for the tickets, encouraging the support of local tourists.

You can see their list of attractions here

10. Enjoy the sea breeze and mojitos at a Batu Feringghi hotel.

When on an island, one might as well make use of the beach, no?

Have a romantic night with a loved one or a cocktail gathering with friends, both are great!

via
11. Smash a few coconuts at a Thaipusam festival.

Join the devotees at the annual Thaipusam festival!

You don't have to go as far as to carry a kavadi, but can instead smash some coconuts as offering to the deity. It is also believed that this ritual symbolises the smashing of the ego to reveal our inner purity, and some, that it crushes obstacles to reveal a clearer path in life.

12. Witness a sunset from the top of Penang hill.

How often do we take a day out to do something for our well-being? And who doesn't love a sunset?

You'll be able to see Penang lit up from the top, totally different from what you see from the streets.

13. Take a ferry instead of the Penang Bridge when travelling to the mainland.

Trust me, it's a completely different experience.

via
14. Visit a new part of town, see an old friend.

It's easy to stay at home all day or only travel from home to school/work and back to home again. However, we shouldn't confine ourselves that way.

Instead, why not try exploring a new part of town and at the same time even visit an old friend? If you live in Ayer Itam, visit Batu Feringghi; if you live in Tanjung Bunga, maybe you would want to make a trip to the fruit orchards in Balik Pulau.

besides KTV Savot Motel, New World Park 后方parking 对面。

Lorong 100 Tahun curry mee | SEEMOU Seekers Trip #4

0

What are some of your favourite Penang street food?

I would have to say that curry mee is definitely on my list.

Despite that, I had been eating regularly at two of my favourite stalls and had never tried the one at Lorong Seratus Tahun prior to this.

Being the Seemou Seekers, we had to visit.

If you think about it, I suppose it seems pretty strange to have tiny lanes in town that had been virtually unheard of made famous by a single food stall. There is also, apparently, another commercialised restaurant in KL named after this curry mee stall in Penang's Lorong 100 Tahun.

But being told that only made me want to taste the original. Wouldn't you?

Our orders were all slightly varied even though it was just curry mee. Some requested for no pigs blood, livers, and cockles, whereas I just went for all.

There was also a bowl of chilli oil in the middle of each table that we could help ourselves to.

The chefs behind the dish.

My favourite part of the meal was, however, the drinks.

I was told that it was a must-order and went along with it (it was some longan drink). I'm glad that I did, it was really good, more so on a hot day.

I am not sure if I've ever seen anyone put as much chilli into his food as one of our colleagues did...

Overall speaking, it wasn't too bad. I found the curry to be pretty milky and milder than other curry mee's I've tried, although that may be because I hardly added any chilli.

In the meantime, I think I will still stick to my regular stalls though.
